Ethical Fashion

Hi, there! Can you do me a favor and close your eyes, just for a second. Try to imagine yourself in an ethical, sustainable outfit from head to toe?
I'd like to know what you saw. Were you barefoot in a flowing tie dyed maxi skirt? Wearing Birkenstocks, perhaps? Maybe a basic hemp cotton tank and some cargo hiking shorts?
If that's along the line of what you imagined, I totally get it. I used to think those were my ethical fashion options too. Casual hippie chic with a side of crunchy boho granola mom. The end.
Don't get me wrong, I love tie dye and maxi skirts. But that's not the point. When I would think of ethically produced or sustainable fashion a few years ago, I would be hard pressed to imagine anything polished enough for the office or trendy enough for girls night out. Sophisticated enough for a special event? Definitely out of the question.
Whether you're a fashionista trend setter or a casual minimalist, does an ethical, sustainable wardrobe seem... boring? Or unattainable?
I find it's still shocking for many people but choosing ethical fashion doesn't require sacrificing style. Your closet can be ethical and stylish. It can be fair trade and minimal, eco-friendly and on-trend, or even sustainable and "Wow girl, you look glam AF!"
If you aren't already on the ethical fashion train, it's time to hop aboard! There are ethically produced, environmentally friendly pieces out there that are just as exciting and fashion-forward as your current favorites.
If you read my post 4 Steps From Fast Fashionista to Conscious Consumer you know that I used to be a fast fashion shopaholic. Now, I only purchase fair fashion, accessories, home decor, etc. There are so many options out there for conscious shoppers, I don't feel like Im missing a thing!
Can you image being able to find everything you need for your wardrobe while also being conscious of the human and environmental impact of all the fashion, accessories, and jewelry you chose to adorn yourself in?
Speaking from experience, it's totally doable. I feel proud and happy with each purchase knowing I'm not contributing to pain, suffering, economic inequality or general awfulness when I pick out new items for my wardrobe. (If you're still not sure what I'm referring to, please check out Why I'm Obsessed with Knowing Who Made my Clothes.)
When you make the switch to fair fashion, you can still enjoy everything you love about your own personal style! It will just be sans the awful consequences of shopping for poorly produced items made in fast fashion factories abroad.
Below I've styled 5 on-trend summer outfit ideas for 5 different fashion profiles. All of the items in this post are vegan; fair trade, ethically produced, or made here in the good ol' USA! No matter your age or favorite fashion style, I hope you'll be inspired to seek out an ethical option next time you're in the market for something new!
